Fog can sneak up fast, especially on rivers and lakes early in the morning. I’ve been caught in it a few times, and visibility can drop to just a few boat lengths. The first time it happened, I realized quickly that my little jon boat wasn’t very visible at all.
After that, I made a few changes. I added a bright all-around white LED pole light that I keep switched on whenever conditions get hazy. I also carry a handheld spotlight that I can flash if I hear another boat approaching. On especially foggy days, I’ll even toss a high-visibility flag onto a rod holder just for extra visibility.
Between the light, the flag, and keeping my speed way down, I feel much more confident running in fog. Other boats can see me from a distance, and I have time to react if someone pops up out of the mist.
