My First Boat Buying Checklist

When I was finally ready to buy a boat, I realized I didn’t even know what to check. So I built my own boat buying checklist, and it saved me more than once.

Hull & Structure

I looked for dents, cracks, or repairs. A solid hull was non-negotiable. I also pressed on the floor for soft spots — rotten wood was a dealbreaker.

Outboard & Motor

I made sure the motor started, idled smoothly, and had good compression. If the seller hesitated to start it, that was a red flag.

Trailer

Since I needed to haul it, I checked trailer tires, bearings, and lights. A bad trailer can ruin the best deal.

Paperwork

Titles and registration had to be clean and in order. No paperwork = no deal.

👉 Having a list kept me from making an emotional decision. Instead of buying the first shiny boat I saw, I ended up with one that’s been reliable ever since.
