🛶
When I first started fishing, a canoe was my boat of choice. It was lightweight, easy to strap on top of my truck, and I could paddle into places no motorboat could reach. But the more I fished, the more I realized its limitations.
Stability Matters
Fishing from a canoe taught me balance — sometimes more than I wanted. Standing up to cast or fighting a fish always felt sketchy. I had to keep gear minimal because every pound affected stability. When I tried taking a buddy along, we were cramped, and one wrong move had us both shifting to keep from flipping.
Why I Moved to a Jon Boat
When I bought my first Jon boat, everything changed. The flat bottom gave me solid stability, and I could stand comfortably while casting. Suddenly, I had space for a cooler, a tackle bag, and even a small trolling motor. I wasn’t just floating anymore — I had a fishing platform.
The Trade-Offs
Sure, a Jon boat is heavier and requires a trailer, but for me the payoff was huge. Fishing became more relaxed, and I didn’t feel limited anymore.
👉 If you’re deciding between the two, think about how often you want to stand, how much gear you’ll bring, and whether stability is worth the upgrade. For me, it absolutely was.
