Fire Extinguishers on Small Boats: Do You Really Need One?

When I first got into boating, I honestly didn’t think a fire extinguisher was necessary on my little jon boat. I mean, it’s aluminum, there’s no cabin, and I wasn’t exactly carrying around gallons of fuel inside the boat. But the more time I spent on the water, the more I realized how fast accidents can happen.

One trip in particular made me change my mind. I was out with a buddy, and he was running a small gas motor. While we were tinkering with the primer bulb, a little bit of fuel spilled on the transom. It wasn’t a big deal at the time, but I couldn’t shake the thought of how easily one spark or a hot motor part could’ve turned that into a disaster.

That same week, I went out and bought a compact marine-rated fire extinguisher. It’s mounted right under my driver’s seat where I can grab it instantly if I ever need it. It’s not big, it doesn’t get in the way, and honestly, it gives me peace of mind every time I head out.

Do you really need one on a small boat? Technically, in some states you’re not required to unless you’ve got an enclosed fuel tank. But in my opinion, it’s worth every penny. It’s one of those things you hope you never use, but if you need it, you’ll be glad it’s there.
