My Routine for Pre-Launch Safety Checks

I’ll admit — when I first started boating, I was guilty of just backing the trailer down, tossing my gear in, and hitting the water. But after a couple of close calls, I developed a pre-launch routine that I follow every single time. It only takes a few minutes, and it’s saved me more than once.

Here’s what I do:

  1. Drain Plug – This is always first on my list. I’ve forgotten it before, and trust me, you only make that mistake once. Now I double-check before I leave the driveway.
  2. Battery & Fuel – I make sure the battery is charged and the connections are tight. Then I check the fuel level and squeeze the primer bulb to make sure the line’s good.
  3. Safety Gear – I confirm I’ve got life jackets, a throw cushion, and my fire extinguisher. Even on short trips, I won’t skip this.
  4. Navigation Lights – If I’m launching near dawn or dusk, I flip the switch to confirm they’re working.
  5. Trailer Straps & Motor Support – Once I’m at the ramp, I remove the transom straps, take off the motor support, and unhook the winch cable just before backing in.

Doing this routine has become second nature. Not only does it keep me safe, but it also makes launching smoother and less stressful. The way I see it, a few minutes on land saves a lot of headaches on the water.
